This beach may look super cool, but don't be fooled... it was really smelly and dirty and HOT. Bombay Beach is this little abandoned town located off of the Salton Sea, 223 feet below sea level. Apparently this beach used to be the spot back in the 1950's and 60's. All the celebrities would come to Bombay Beach and party! How this lake came to be was actually sort of an accident. Back in 1905, the Colorado River flooded a desert valley called Salton Sink and continue to flow for 2 years, creating the Salton Sea.
At first this lake seemed like a little miracle, fish prospered, birds flocked, and many came to enjoy the beach and the resort lifestyle. But, with no drainage system and basically no rainfall, the water just sat there and got nasty with pesticides and became too salty for the fish to even live in. They started to die and would wash up on the shore where their dead little fish carcass would just rot. So when I say it smelled nasty... It. Smelled. Nasty. Little dead fish bones are all over the beach now and the desert heat does not make it better. The town is basically abandoned now with a population of about 250 people.
So sad to think that people like Marilyn Monroe used to spend their days just relaxing here... and now its this sad little wasteland. Nonetheless though, it made for some pretty cool photo opportunities.
